I’m Susan Brooks—an oil painter, freelance book editor, publisher, and writing coach based in Colorado.
My work lives at the intersection of visual art and storytelling. Whether I’m painting or working with a manuscript, I’m drawn to the same question: how do we express what feels just beneath the surface?
I hold a master’s degree in publishing from The George Washington University and have spent years working with writers to develop, shape, and refine their books. My editorial background includes structural editing, manuscript development, and coaching writers through the long, often nonlinear process of finishing meaningful work.
From 2009 to 2019, I served on the board of directors for Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, supporting a community of authors through education, mentorship, and craft development.
I am also the editor-in-chief of Literary Wanderlust, an independent publisher focused on thoughtful, story-driven work written by humans for humans. That role continues to shape how I approach both writing and art—with attention to depth, voice, and emotional resonance.
As a self-taught artist working primarily in oil painting, I focus on color, form, and expression. I am currently continuing my training through the Evolve Artist program, strengthening foundational techniques while developing a personal visual language rooted in movement and feeling.
In addition to editing and painting, I incorporate Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) into my coaching practice. This allows me to support writers and creatives not just at the level of craft, but at the level of mindset—working through creative resistance, internal blocks, and the patterns that can quietly shape the creative process.
This work is part of a larger transition toward a more intentional creative life—one centered on art, writing, and meaningful projects that take time, attention, and honesty.
At home, I share my life with two very opinionated cats, Ragnar and Ziggy, who remain firmly committed to routine and early breakfasts.
